TREE STEWARDS
Trees are essential to the health of our local rivers and the people who live in our watersheds. They mitigate stormwater runoff, sequester carbon, improve air quality, reduce erosion, and much more. However, there is a severe lack of tree canopy within both urban and suburban areas of the Eastern Shore. ShoreRivers’ Tree Stewards is a program to increase tree canopy coverage in local environments by training and supporting community volunteers in proper tree planting and tree care practices.
Tree Stewards are the lead volunteers for this program. They are trained to work with individuals and organizations within their own communities to identify areas in need of tree canopy, create planting designs, and organize and lead tree planting projects. Additionally, Tree Steward volunteers assist with maintenance, ensuring our trees will grow and thrive for years to come.
To become a certified Tree Steward, volunteers must complete a three-part virtual training that covers topics such as tree biology, proper tree planting techniques, and site assessment and a live, in-person tree planting.
If you are interested in becoming a ShoreRivers Tree Steward, please fill out the volunteer inquiry form and select “Tree Stewards.” If you are interested in helping with tree or native species plantings but can not commit to the certification, please select “plantings” on the volunteer inquiry form.
